What is counseling (counselling)? : (Note: the US “counseling” term is used here)
Counseling is a form of intervention in an on-going event. Such event is (or multiple events) often acting as a disadvantage to the sufferer or the person who is seeking counseling. An on-going event is one which is unresolved and which continues to impact on the overall health/happiness (well-being) or decision making process of the individual. Such decision making process may be work related, relationship/marriage, financial, issues that surround children etc.
Legally, counseling implies that a counselor encourages or aids another person seeking counseling to achieve a certain set objective or desire.
Fundamentally, need for counseling arises because there is a conflict between you (or your surrogate) and another entity (spouse, employer, children etc). This is the conflict that needs to be resolved. Without you knowing, this conflict is a threat to your happiness.
How is counseling delivered?
Regardless of the methods used (face-to-face, internet, email, books, TV, Video, demonstration telephone etc), one and undeniable element common to all, is that words are tools employed.
